We always tell people that their results will be different when we show them these pictures during consultations. Your skin quality, muscle tone, amount of extra skin you have and your overall health all affect the end results which are different for everyone. But looking at before and after pictures can give you a good idea of how much your body can change after a tuck.
The differences we see in the pictures before and after are often huge. Many people who are going to have surgery have a belly that sticks out, loose or sagging skin, stretch marks in their lower abdomen, and sometimes a bulge or split in their abdominal muscles that can be seen. Some people have what’s called an “apron” of skin that falls down over their lower abdomen. These issues can make people feel bad about themselves and uncomfortable in their own skin. After a Tummy Tuck, the change is usually pretty obvious. The stomach looks flatter and more toned, the waistline is more defined and the middle part of the body looks smoother and younger. The extra skin is gone and the abdominal muscles are tightened giving you that strong base that makes up your core. Most of the time the stretch marks in the lower abdomen are gone with the extra skin. However, stretch marks above the belly button will stay but will be less noticeable on a flatter surface.
With our tummy tuck patients’ permission we take pictures of them before and after the surgery in our Toronto office. We do this for a few reasons. First, it helps prospective patients understand what’s possible and makes it easier for them to picture what their own results might be. Second, it lets our current patients look back and see how far they’ve come. A lot of folks forget how much their body has changed after surgery. Having those prior pictures lets them see how much they’ve changed.
We’ll show you a lot of before-and-after pictures of other patients who had the same body type or issues as you when you come in for a consultation. This way we can talk more specifically about what we can do with your surgery. We’ll also take pictures of you before the procedure which we’ll use to compare to during your follow-up visits.
Keep in mind it takes time for the final results of a tummy tuck to show. You may not be able to see your real results right after surgery because of swelling and bruising. Your new shape will start to show up over the next few months as the swelling goes down and your body heals. Most patients see the best results 6 months to a year after surgery but some people keep getting better beyond that.
