Beber Plastic Cosmetic Surgery
Repositioning the nipples is an important part of breast reduction that must be done carefully and with precision. We move the nipple and areola to a higher, younger spot on the newly formed breast. To keep the blood flow and feeling right while getting the look right this must be done exactly right. No matter how long it takes we never skip this important step.
Some patients have breast reduction surgery with other procedures which of course makes the overall surgery time longer. For example having a reduction on one side and a breast augmentation on the other to fix asymmetry takes longer overall. Some people also have a lift done on one breast while the other is reduced. These combination procedures take more time in the operating room but can fix more than one problem at once.
Your body can make surgery longer or shorter in several cases. If you have dense breast tissue, have had breast surgery before or have abnormal blood vessels you may need more time to go through safely. During your consultation we carefully examine your anatomy to figure out what can make your surgery take longer.
At our Toronto office we put doing the job right ahead of sticking to a strict schedule. We always put safety and accuracy first even when we’re working fast. To get the beautiful long lasting results you want you need to be very careful with your surgical approach. This may mean taking extra time to do it right. Anesthesia adds time before and after the actual surgery. Before we start the anesthesiologist needs time to sedate you, set up monitoring and make sure you’re asleep. Most of the time this takes 15-30 minutes. After the surgery you’ll also spend some time waking up from the anesthesia while being closely monitored. Breast reduction surgery usually takes 3-5 hours from the time you enter the operating room to the time you wake up in recovery.
The amount of time you spend in the recovery room varies. Some people wake up fast from anesthesia and feel good in 30 minutes while others take longer to fully recover. We watch you until you wake up, feel better and are ready to go home with your driver. You’ll usually spend about an hour recovering before you can go home although this can vary.
The rules of the surgery facility also affect how long you spend there. Getting ready for surgery includes changing into surgical clothes, consulting with the surgical team and doing final safety checks. These critical steps make sure everything is ready for your surgery and usually take 30-60 minutes. After surgery and recovery discharge procedures including checking your dressings and giving you medication instructions take another 15-30 minutes.
When you plan your day around breast reduction surgery you need to think about the whole experience not just the procedure. In Toronto you should plan to spend 5-7 hours at the surgical centre. This includes everything that needs to be done before the surgery, the surgery itself, the time it takes to recover and the steps that need to be taken to leave the hospital. We recommend that you have someone drive you home and stay with you for at least the first 24 hours after your surgery.
Many people are worried that a longer procedure means higher risk or problems. But taking the right amount of time to do the procedure correctly reduces the risk. If you rush through complicated surgical steps you’re more likely to make mistakes or have less than ideal results. We think the length of a surgery shows how careful and attentive the surgeon needs to be not how hard or risky it is. At Beber Plastic Surgery we give you realistic timelines so you can plan ahead. We know you need to plan ahead if you want to take time off work or find someone to watch your kids. We want you to have the information. We can give you an idea of how long your surgery will take based on your consultation but we always put doing the job right ahead of sticking to a schedule.
The quality of your results and the safety of your care are more important than how long your breast reduction surgery really takes. We promise to pay attention to every step of each procedure no matter how long it takes, whether it’s 2 hours or 4 hours. The results of your surgery will last for years so the time you spend on it will be well worth it.
