The No Touch Keller Funnel Technique in Breast Augmentation

The “No Touch” Breast Augmentation

Thanks to new technology doctors are able to use new techniques when it comes to breast augmentation. With such technological advancements, women are able to get more natural-looking results than ever before. One of the latest trends in breast augmentations is the “No Touch” Keller Funnel technique. Although it was first introduced in 2009, it’s been slowly gaining traction and is now a highly recommended technique when it comes to breast augmentations using silicone or gel implants.

Silicone implants are becoming more and more popular with patients these days over their saline counterparts. Today’s silicone implants are created to be thicker and more durable, holding more solid gel than earlier-generation silicone options. Patients and surgeons are more confident in the safety of silicone implants, which could be a reason why this method is popular now.

The technique uses the Keller Funnel, which is a single-use device that’s made to make the insertion of silicone breasts much easier. The funnel features an internal coating that is slippery when wet, so that the implants just slide into the cavity directly from the funnel. The surgeon’s gloved hands never come into contact with the implant, which is why it’s considered the “No Touch” technique.

The Keller Funnel was made to reduce the risk of capsular contracture (hardening), which is a common complication of breast augmentations. This happens when scar tissue forms around the implant, causing pain, stiffness, and possible leakage of the implant’s fluid.

It also greatly reduces the chances for bacteria or any other foreign body contamination to enter the body due to implant placement. One of the causes of capsular contracture is biofilm, which is a coating of microorganisms that adhere to the surface of the implant to cause a low-grade infection. This happens when the implant or the pocket is contaminated during the surgery.

The technique is also beneficial since it allows surgeons the chance to place the implants into the breasts with less force. It also requires a smaller incision than with other breast augmentation techniques.

Surgeons can use the “No Touch” technique with implants using three of the most commonly used incisions, which are around the areola, the fold right under the breast, or through the armpit. In general, the use of the Keller Funnel makes breast augmentation surgery using silicone gel implants much safer!
