No Touch Keller Funnel Technique: 5 Advantages for Breast Augmentation

Dr Brett Beber - Advantages for Breast Augmentation

As a Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon and the Co-Chairman of the Toronto Breast Symposium, Dr. Beber is continuously seeking new technology and techniques to achieve the best possible outcomes for his patients.

Introduced in 2009, the no touch technique using a Keller funnel when performing silicone breast augmentation is one technique that brings many advantages.

Breast augmentation is the most popular surgical procedure performed yearly in North America among women.  Patients who seek Dr. Beber as their surgeon are looking for natural results and among the choices of implants that are available, silicone gel implant is the most popular choice.  It is a standard, that Dr. Beber performs the breast augmentation procedure with the no touch Keller funnel.

The Keller funnel is a single-use device that’s made to be used to deliver the silicone gel implants into the breast pocket created by Dr. Beber.  The funnel features an internal coating that is slippery when wet so that the implants just slide into the breast pocket directly from the funnel.  Dr. Beber’s gloved hands never come into contact with the implants hence the “no touch” technique.  The 5 advantages of using the Keller funnel are:

  1.  Shorter incisions/scar.  By using a Keller funnel, Dr. Beber is able to keep the incision shorter.
  2. Reduced risk of infections.  This “no touch” technique is an approach that does not require Dr. Beber to touch the implants hence reducing the risk of bacteria contamination.  There is the belief that this can reduce capsular contracture a risk associated with breast augmentation.
  3. Speeding recovery.  Using a Keller funnel will reduce possible trauma to the breast tissue which in turn can lead to a faster healing time, easier recovery, and reduced pain during the recovery.
  4. Reduced Stress on the implant.  Using a funnel with its slippery coating allows little force when placing and positioning the implant into the breast pocket created by Dr. Beber.  Reduced force to the implants will reduce the risk of implant rupture and/or weakening of the implant prolonging the life of the implants.
  5. Faster procedure time. Using the Keller funnel can lead to a shorter procedure time and shorter time for the patient to be under general anesthesia.

Dr. Beber uses a Keller funnel, no touch technique with silicone gel implants with the most commonly used incisions: inframammary fold, areaola, and axillary.
