HOW IT WORKS
A brachioplasty involves a long incision placed along the back of the arm where the skin hangs or just in front of that. It is usually combined with liposuction to remove the fatty component under the skni first to get the best result if fat is present. the length of the incision depends on the amount of extra skin that needs to be removed – more skin means a longer incision. For those patients whose excess skin extends into the armpit and side of the chest, the incision can be extended into those areas to contour them as well. After removal of the excess fat and skin, the incisions are closed with sutures and dressings are applied. Patients will werar compressive garments on the arms for 4-6 weeks to decrease swelling and bruising. Like all scars, brachioplasty scars usually get lighter over time, but never go away. These scars are hidden when wearing long sleeved clothing, but are visible in short sleeve clothes like t-shirts, tank tops, sleeveless dresses, bathing suits etc…Because these scars are not well hidden in these types of clothes, most people undergoing this operation have quite severe amounts of extra skin, often from significant weight loss. To many of these patients, the benefit from removing large amounts of arm skin outweighs the downsides of the visitble scars.
WHAT TO EXPECT
- a more contoured arm silhouette with better shape, and a skin envelope that better matches the arm
- a long scar extending from the elbow region to the armpit, or even higher if the patient desire contouring of the armpit and side of the chest
- some swelling, bruising and a feeling of tightness in the arm
- some pain but it is usually managed well with minimal amounts of pain medication at home for a few days
- some areas of skin numbness in the arm, most of which typically resolves over time, but there can be areas of the arm with permanent numbness after surgery.
PROCESS
- A consultation with Dr. Beber to discuss your specific surgical goals. A review of your health history including any previous surgeries, medications, or other health issues or concerns.
- An examination of your arm tissues including the amount, quality, and elasticity of your skin, the amount of subcutaneous fat under the skin, and the location of where the extra skin of the arm and chest begins and ends.
- An in depth explanation of the surgery, including recovery, risks, complications and expected outcomes. A preoperative apppointment several weeks before surgery to answer any further questions you may have, to finalize the surgical plan with you, to provide you with your prescriptions prior to surgery, and to complete all necessary paperwork, and arrange your first follow up appointment.
- Multiple routine follow up appointments with the team to monitor your progress, maximize healing, and optimize scar management

Potential risks are minimal and may include temporary swelling, bruising, or asymmetry. Serious complications are rare but may include infection, allergic reactions or vascular occlusions.

Pre-care instructions may include avoiding blood-thinning medications or alcohol. Post-care may involve gentle skincare, avoiding strenuous activities, and refraining from massaging the treated areas for a short period following treatment.No strenous activity fo 48-72h, no facials or other profesional treatments over injected areas for 2 weeks, no travel or flying within 5 days post injections
